It is unfortunate that the dynamic range of the scene caused the clouds to blow out. But it is still a really good picture.

I´ve darkened it a little bit again, I already did this several times, but I just didn´t get rid of the problem. Anyway, thanks for the comment :)

it might not be repairable. Sometimes we photographers just need to accept that the equipment has limitations.

But if you don't mind please allow me to ask some questions/comments.

did you shoot in RAW. If so, you might be able to re-balance the highlights with the recovery slider. (But this will not work if the detail is all lost because of the dynamic range.)

I don't know what program you use to process, but if you have a shadows and highlights filter, it might be able to recover some of the detail in the highlights and lighten the shadows.

Processing is really an art form in itself.

Another last ditch method is to multiply a new layer over the existing layer and then to use the eraser tool to "cut out" the areas that are too dark in the new layer allowing them to come through from the lower layer.

It strikes me here, that I really don't know if anything I am saying will make sense to you. If not, please accept my apology, I am not trying to make you feel bad. Dynamic range is a real challenge for photographers, and managing it is no simple matter. In the end, sometimes we just have to accept what the camera has been able to capture. I too have a number of beautiful scenes that are beyond what the CMOS can handle.

Thanks for your help :)
I didn´t shoot in RAW here, it´s a JPEG. My memory card didn´t have much space left, so I decided to shoot in 8 megapixels JPEG´s that day. Maybe that´s why I can´t really solve the problem, it might work better with RAW.

I tried several things - darkened the overexposed parts of the picture several times in "ArcSoft PhotoStudio Darkroom" and today I darkened the clouds again in GIMP (it´s an updated version now). It helped a bit, but as soon as I tried to go further, it suddenly looked unnatural and completely useless. I don´t know if it´s fine like it is now, I´m not completely sufficient with it. But that´s the difference in "going to the mountains and shooting" and "going to shoot in the mountains". I hope you know what I mean - if I would have gone there just to get good pictures, I might have stayed longer to wait for a better atmosphere. It still was great and it was not my last time there, that´s for sure.

Btw, I don´t use Photoshop. I don´t have one mighty tool for everything. This might be better, but I´m just used to using several programs.

I am thinking the problem is more the dynamic range of the scene. I would leave it alone. It is a good image the way it is. There are limits to the medium, and this is one of them that we just must accept.

Sahne. ;)
